His crisp vocals spill onto seductive synths embellished with lush atmospheres and pulsing rhythms. His '80s electro sound paired with his decadent glam-rock appearance come reminiscent of a cross between Prince and Roxy Music. Yet Chris Corner, known for his work with the trip-hoppy Sneaker Pimps, describes the challenges of his identity crisis through his solo project, IAMX.
“There is a kind of fucked-up symbiosis in what I do. I can't say I am happy but I can say I am alive,” Corner says just before leaving Berlin for his current U.S. tour.
While Sneaker Pimps have gone on an unofficial hiatus, Corner is breaking away from the project he formed when only 15 years old and has delved and extracted dark electronic melodies from the beast within. The outcome has stirred up erotic electronics and personal lyrics, delivered through sometimes slick, polished vocals. Corner explains, “I wanted “President” and “Spit It Out,” leading Corner to headline a number of festivals in the last year.
IAMX has thrived on a reputation for extraordinary live shows complete with a backup band. “People tell me [the shows are] an extreme experience,” Corner says. “It's difficult to see it from the insider point of view. I know we love to keep it spontaneous and highly energetic—a full-force, emotional sweat-fest with depth and hard work.”
Before Corner brings his demons to the Urban Lounge, he tells IN about his multiple personalities, musical influence and future projects.
IN Utah This Week: Tell us the meaning behind the name IAMX. Was the solo project in the works at the time of Sneaker Pimps' “Becoming X”?
Chris Corner: Not at all, thank God. I was such a kid then. I am glad it has taken this long. I feel I gained enough problems and made enough mistakes to have something to write about. IAMX for me is a growing-up project. It does create as many demons as it solves, but that's therapy.
IN: In many interviews, it seems there is an identity crisis surrounding your persona as IAMX. Is this something that has changed over time?
CC: It has become a tearing schizophrenic project. But that's fine. I know it has to be like this. I have the opportunity to get out my frustrations and anger in a very efficient and satisfying way. Every night is like a cleansing process. The beast lives at night, and in the morning I am reborn as a relaxed, calm person again. I love both people.
IN: What was your vision both musically and visually when you started IAMX?
CC: I had a simple urge to be away from opinions and compromise. IAMX became a hideaway for me. I don't really listen to what's happening in the big bad world in terms of contemporary music, politics, human suffering. I have enough baggage to write for a lifetime, so the outside is just a distraction most of the time. Obviously you can't be completely sheltered, so every now and again I am reminded that there is real horror, ignorance and greed. That gives me another kick to stay hungry enough to keep my little world going.
IN: Where did you start when it came to songwriting?
CC: I started on the guitar like most boys. But my focus was a classical and soft, melodic angle. I loved Simon and Garfunkel. Their songs gave me my first insight into powerful songwriting and poetry in lyrics. When I realized I didn't want to be an obsessed guitar player, I learned other instruments and how to become a producer.
IN: You are known for extraordinary showmanship. With so many shows and tours, how are you able to bring it out night after night?
CC: It's mainly psychological, but you really have to treat your body with respect. Get rest, sleep, eat healthy. It's impossible to maintain when you are abusing yourself. Each show has its own problems and charm ... working the mind, dealing with sh-t, fighting against an antiquated weakening music industry ... give the fuel to get onstage. Also, the strength of commitment from our fans is a driving force. That support is what gives me the real strength of mind to 'feel it' every night. Basically, we are in it together.
IN: Tell us about the DVD package you are working on.
CC: We are collecting footage for an experimental live DVD to be released in Aprilnext year . It will hopefully keep some momentum going while I produce the next record ... combining live shows, visuals, abstract filming, exclusive performances and viewer interaction. The concept and design is still in formulation, but we are gathering the material as we tour. So if fans want to be a part of that, they need to come to the shows.
IN: Who will be in your backing band on this tour? How did you meet them?
CC: I found them in Berlin just over a year ago through management and friends. It has become a very international band. We have a German girl on keyboards, an American on guitar and a fellow Englishman on drums. All great players and relaxed people completely committed to the independent IAMX movement. There is a very close and supportive artistic community in Berlin, so it wasn't hard to find a great band.
IN: What are plans for IAMX and your other projects following this tour?
CC: I will be straight back into another dark Berlin basement to record the next album. I wanted to do it in the Seychelles, but my management is worried I will come up with a dub reggae record and talk about the great things in life. I don´t think anyone wants that to happen .
